Too often, autism is described by all the things a person cannot do. Yes, autism is a disability – and so it can make every day challenging. But it’s not all bad. Autistic people have so many unique strengths. Here are my 5 favourite things about being autistic:
1. Being organised = I love sorting things and making lists, and this comes in very handy for daily life. I can keep tidy, and I can rattle through a to-do list like it’s nothing. I love getting joy out of the simple things in life.
2. Spending time with myself = I love going out on day trips by myself. I find a certain calmness is being alone. I have love that I can find ways to entertain myself, and I rarely get bored.
3. Accepting of difference = I love that my autism allows me to view people outside of the social norms. I question what makes someone supposedly ‘normal,’ and I am accepting of people who are different, because I know what it’s like.
4. A passion for learning = I love learning and how you can learn new things every day. The excitement of finding out a new fact or indulging yourself into an interesting subject is unmatched.
5. Autistic joy = I love that I get to be so happy and enthusiastic about things. The best feeling in the world is when you’re doing something you really love, and you get to happy stim with a beaming smile on your face.
